Bebop and Hardbop are two influential sub-genres of jazz that emerged in the mid 20th century, each of them marking a significant shift in the evolution of jazz.
Bebop sprung out of New York's music clubs in the 40s, breaking away from swing to emphasize musical complexity, extended improvisation and complex chord progressions. Pioneered by the likes of Thelonius Monk and Dizzy Gillespie, musicians and fans alike continue to appreciate the genre.
Hardbop came about slightly later, and built on the musical foundation of bebop; it is more strongly influenced by blues, and gospel music, with a heavier emphasis on groove. One of its more well known pioneers was the late great Miles Davis.
